South Asia Regional Clinician, Motivation

The primary purpose of this role is to work alongside the Motivation India Team (MID), to support the development of Motivation India’s Partner Network of wheelchair services and State Government clinics.

Motivation’s South Asia regional clinician will train, mentor, and build the capacity of the MID team; to establish, support, monitor and evaluate sustainable models of service delivery. They will work with MID in 1) the development of clinic based wheelchair service provision through established and new wheelchair service partners 2) the delivery of MID’s outreach model of wheelchair service provision; both in accordance with the World Health Organisation 'Guidelines on the provision of Manual Wheelchairs in less resourced settings'. http://www.who.int/disabilities/publications/technology/wheelchairguidelines/en/

Motivation’s South Asia regional clinician will work as part of the Technical Resource Team (TRT); and receive regular support from the UK Based TRT. As part of Motivation’s Technical Resource Team, the South Asia Regional Clinician will be based in Bengaluru, India

Contract: One year

Accountabilities:

Training and Mentoring:
• To develop MID capacity through the identification of training needs, both formal and informal
• To train and mentor the Motivation India team (MID) to ensure a high quality of clinical and technical services being delivered into Motivation’s programme
• To support MID to assess knowledge and skill of partner wheelchair service personnel; and advise on provision of clinical and technical training and mentoring.
• To work alongside the UK based Clinicians and MID to plan, manage and deliver training for new staff and partners
• To develop the capacity of one member of MID to deliver WSTP Basic

Clinical and Technical:
• To be skilled in delivering wheelchair service delivery in accordance with the 8 steps defined in World Health Organisation 'Guidelines on the provision of Manual Wheelchairs in less resourced settings'.
• To become familiar with appropriate preparation and modification of Motivation’s product range, working with the support and advice of the technical team
• To monitor quality and use of Motivation’s products; providing feedback on quality control issues To monitor and evaluate products in the field, supplying feedback to Motivation’s technical team on clinical, technical and quality control issues
• To liaise with the Lead Technical Specialist and ensure up to date knowledge on products; disseminate this to the MID and partners as required
Service Development:
• To provide support to ensure MID team and partners have skills, systems and procedures established with minimum facilities and equipment to deliver the eight steps of wheelchair service provision; whether through a clinic or outreach model
• To become familiar with Motivation’s Service Assessment Tool (SAT), and to utilise recommendations from SAT to mentor service development of existing and new clinical partners
• To contribute to monitoring and evaluation of wheelchair service provision across the network using Motivation’s service assessment, monitoring and evaluation data, and case studies
• To keep up to date with professional developments within the field of international health and development
Communications
• To communicate with the TRT through their fortnightly team meetings, with the MID team through their 4-monthly clinical meetings; and Skype meetings as required
• To communication regularly with Regional Director_ South Asia
• To work closely with UK Programme Development (PD)team; notably the South Asia Desk Officer and Programme Support Officer

Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
Essential:
• A relevant professional qualification in e.g. Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy
• Significant knowledge and expertise in the provision of wheelchairs and postural support devices
• Experience of working with children with cerebral palsy
• Good verbal and written communication skills
• The ability to work under own initiative and unsupervised, while also a strong team player
• Good organisational skills to plan and prioritise work efficiently
• Evidence of effective problem solving
• Skills in training and presentation
• Experience travelling in less resourced settings
• Confidence to travel independently in Asia, and the flexibility to travel to other countries as required
• Good computer literacy, including Microsoft Word and Excel

Desirable:
• Five years post-graduate qualification experience
• Experience in working alongside health, community and government organisations
• Experience working in a developing country context
